MEMBERS OF U.S. CONGRESS ISSUE CONGRATULATIONS TO PRESIDENT CHEN AND VICE-PRESIDENT LU

Since President Chen's election day victory on March 20, Members of Congress have issued congratulatory notes and statements.

Rep. David Wu (D-OR) writes: "I would like to congratulate President Chen Shui-bian for a well-fought victory."

Rep. Musgrave (R-CO) writes: "Taiwan has been a long time ally and strong advocate for human rights, democratic freedoms and a bastion of strong economic strength...I am proud to know that we have another country that will stand with us in our pursuit of democracy and our fight against terror."

Former Representative Bob Schaffer (R-CO) who is running for a Senate seat this year wrote: "Congratulations upon being re-elected president and vice-president of Taiwan! Your victory has important meaning around the world as it does among your countrymen. It is a resounding victory for democracy, a statement of courage on behalf of Taiwanese citizens and a triumph for all of us who hold a passion for freedom in our heart."

Other Members of Congress that issued congratulatory statements: Rep. Ciro Rodriguez(D-TX), Rep. Solomon Ortiz(D-TX), Rep. Dennis Cardoza (D-CA), Rep. Charles Gonzalez (D-TX), Rep. Ruben Hinojosa (D-TX), Rep. Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Rep. Silvestre Reyes (D-TX), Rep. Hilda Solis (D-CA).

FAPA President Ming-chi Wu said, “Over the past days, Washington scholars have begun questioning the smartness of the Administration refraining from sending a congratulatory message to President Chen and Vice President Lu. This has proven to be conducive to the current instability in Taiwan. We know that the Administration will send their congratulations letter as soon as Taiwan's Central Elections Commission has certified the election result on March 26. We agree with the scholars: if the Administration would have sent its congratulatory note to Chen and Lu immediately after the elections, that letter would have helped calm down emotions ”

Ciro Rodriguez (D-TX), Rep. Solomon Ortiz(D-TX), Rep. Dennis Cardoza (D-CA), Rep. Charles Gonzalez (D-TX), Rep. Ruben Hinojosa (D-TX), Rep. Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Rep. Silvestre Reyes (D-TX), Rep.
