    Taiwanese American Heritage Week  2001
TAHW STATEMENT BY REP. SUE KELLY (R-NY):

May 11, 2001

It is my sincere pleasure to extend to the Taiwanese American Community,
especially those in NY's 19th Congressional District, my heartfelt congratulations as you
celebrate Taiwanese American Heritage Week.

Taiwanese Americans have contributed greatly to the success we currently enjoy in the 19th District of NY. 40% of all Taiwanese Americans are college graduates and 8% hold doctoral degrees. Taiwanese Americans are leaders in the fields of education, the sciences and I am pleased to serve with the first Taiwanese American elected to Congress, Representative David Wu.

Taiwanese Americans have also contributed to the cause of freedom and democracy through their selfless defense and support of the island of Taiwan. Real security for Taiwan and the promotion of democracy throughout all of Asia is a concern of mine and all Taiwanese Americans.

Once again, congratulations as you celebrate this special week deservedly set aside to honor the contributions of Taiwanese Americans.

Sincerely,

Sue Kelly
Member of Congress
