Taiwan
Republic
of China
Dear
Mr. President:
As
Co-Chairs of the Congressional Taiwan Caucus, we were pleased to
learn that you will be making transit stops in Honolulu and Seattle
en route to Central America. Although you will only be in the United
States for a short period of time, we strongly believe your visit
will further strengthen U.S.-Taiwan Relations.
Mr.
President, please be advised that we greatly admire the Taiwanese
people and your nation's economic and political accomplishments.
Your recent reelection as President was an unequivocal reaffirmation
of the vitality and viability of democracy on Taiwan.
We
were also impressed by your call, in your inaugural address, for a
meaningful dialogue between Taiwan and China and very much hope that
Beijing will respond positively to your plea for a cooperative
effort on the part of both countries to establish a "peace and
stability framework" for the future of cross strait relations.
We believe that peace in the Strait is vital to security and
stability in East Asia.
In
past years, Taiwan and the United States have been allies and
partners in many areas of mutual concern. In times of need and
turmoil, both countries have come to each other's aid. We appreciate
your government's efforts and actions to protect U.S. citizens in
Taiwan after 9/11 and your cooperation with U.S. intelligence
agencies in global anti-terrorism activities. We are also aware of
your government's support for the reconstruction of Iraq and
Afghanistan. Taiwan is indeed America's friend and deserves our
support.
We
are hopeful that the relations between Taiwan and the U.S. will
continue to prosper and that Dr. David Lee, your new Ambassador to
the United States, will be an effective link between your government
and ours. We join our colleagues in the Congress welcoming this
talented diplomat to Washington, D.C.
Mr.
President, we look forward to your visit and pledge to continue to
make every effort in Congress to foster even closer relations
between our two peoples.
Sincerely,
Steve
