    President Chen's Supports Referendum

During a speech given to a gathering of overseas Taiwanese in Japan via a satellite video link on August 3, Taiwan’s President Chen Shui-bian said that Taiwan and China are two separate countries on each side of the Taiwan Strait. He also elaborated his remarks earlier this month about Taiwan needs to walk down its own path.  Chen explained that the path that Taiwan needs to take is clearly Taiwan’s road to democracy, freedom, human rights and peace. At the end of the speech, President Chen stressed that only the 23 million people of Taiwan has the right to decide Taiwan’s future. He said, “Whenever that need arises, the people of Taiwan will make decisions through referendum. Referendum is basic human rights, also the basic human rights of Taiwan’s 23 million people; it can not be deprived and limited.” At the end of the speech, President Chen called for the attention to recognize the importance and urgency of the legislation of referendum.
