To
the editor:
Misinterpretations
of Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian’s recent statements abound
as do to-be-expected fulminations from the Chinese Communist
Party leadership. Let’s
be clear about what Chen did declare:
- Taiwan
is walking its own road of democracy, freedom, human rights
and peace. He
clearly is contrasting this road with that still trod by
the CCP in China.
- Taiwan
is an independent, autonomous nation.
It does not belong to anyone, or any entity, other
than its own 23 million democracy-loving citizens.
- A
referendum is a basic human right that cannot be deprived
or restricted and Taiwan should pass legislation allowing
for referenda.
The
context for these statements is quite straightforward – China’s
heavy-handed leaders continue to build a huge overhang of
missiles and weaponry aimed at Taiwan and also continue to
squeeze Taiwan’s international space.
By
his statements, Chen is doing what his people elected him
to do – protect their interests and declare their right to
exist in freedom.
Sounds
like good leadership to me.
Sincerely,
Back
to Chen on Referendum
