"Give Taiwan WHO status"
The SARS crisis brings to the forefront the irreparable
consequences of the World Health Organization's
exclusion of the 23 million people of Taiwan. Taiwan
imported $3.6 billion goods from Texas in 2002 and is
the third top overseas market of Texas, trailing Canada
and Mexico.
WHO consistently rejects Taiwan's plea for inclusion.
Therefore, Taiwan has no direct access to the medical
resources of WHO and does not receive direct help
against the severe acute respiratory syndrome threat.
Ignoring the health needs of Taiwan's people, the WHO
bases its decisions on China's rejection of Taiwan's
membership. It is ironic that the WHO would place the
health of a nation in jeopardy.
Taiwan must be granted observer status at the WHO summit
this May, starting a progressive resolution of Taiwan's
WHO membership and all other international
organizations.
