Taiwan's Vote A Sign of Stability March 23, 2004
With 80.27 percent voter participation, Taiwan's March
20 presidential election was both a victory for democracy and for the
Democratic Progressive Party of President Chen Shui-bian and Vice
President Annette Lu. The vote showed the strength of Chen's four-year
effort in office, as he received almost 1.5 million more votes in 2004
than in the three-way 2000 race.
Opposition leaders claimed that the assassination
attempt on the president and vice president was a staged event to win more
support in the election. The graphic pictures of Chen being treated in the
hospital put this conspiracy theory to rest.
The impact of the election on the United States means
that since Taiwan's democracy is strong and alive, the United States has
no better ally in Asia than Taiwan.
Taiwanese-Americans are proud of our homeland's
achievements and see Taiwan as both a democratic U.S. ally and a beacon of
hope for a China still under the yoke of authoritarian rule. Democracy and
respect for the democratic process are the true source of peace and
stability in East Asia.
