China and Taiwan
MARCH 26, 2005
Now that China
has aggressively framed a legal basis for future military actions
against Taiwan, it is time to rethink U.S. strategy ("China defends
law 'for peaceful reunification,"' March 15). Perhaps the most
effective way to uphold a thriving young democracy, to avoid a
military confrontation and to protect the peace and stability in the
Western Pacific region is to conclude a free-trade agreement and
establish normal diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
