U.S. should oppose anti-secession
law
China's so-called anti-secession law is
being drafted with the aims of seeking to arbitrate Taiwan's
policy-making and dictate Taiwan affairs
as a domestic issue of China
("Restless Taiwan, rural poverty are key issues for Chinese
lawmakers," March 6). This renders this "law"
illegitimate because Taiwan is a
self-governed democratic country and has never been a part
of the People's Republic of China. The framework
of this law is to lay a legal base to
attack Taiwan if Taiwan declares de jure independence. In
light of China's announced huge increase in
its military budget and its constant
threat of war against Taiwan, the enactment of this
dictator-style legislation will without a doubt
unilaterally change the status quo in
the Taiwan Strait and seriously endanger the peace and
stability in the Pacific region, which is in
the political, security and economic
interests of the United States.
As a great nation that pledges to
encourage and protect democracy and freedom around the
world, the U.S. should strongly oppose this
extremely provocative anti-secession
legislation of the People's Republic of China and reaffirm
the U.S. policy that the future of Taiwan should be resolved
by peaceful means and with the consent of the people of
Taiwan.
