Snub of
Taiwanese leader uncalled-for
President Bush has humiliated
Taiwan's people when he denied Taiwan's president, Chen
Shui-bian, a stopover in the continental United States (Page
16A, May 4). Some said Bush was displeased because Chen
scrapped the National Unification Council, an inactive
Taiwanese government organization, and agitated China. China
has contributed nothing to Taiwan's hard-earned democracy
and prosperity, and now shamelessly wants to take over
Taiwan. Chen became Taiwan's president through free
election. He represents Taiwan's people and deserves no less
respect than any other head of state. Bush did not set a
good example of international leadership, whether he was
angry at Chen or he just needed to kowtow to China.
