It was gratifying to see the Aug. 22 editorial
"Games Behind Bars," in which Post editorialists
condemned China for conditionally sentencing two
elderly women to a labor camp.
China not only disregards its own citizens'
rights but also bullies its neighbors. A case in
point is Taiwan. China first forced the
International Olympic Committee to designate the
island nation "Chinese Taipei." Just before the
Beijing Games began, China changed the already
undignified name to "Taipei, China." This was a
blatant maneuver to rhetorically annex Taiwan.
Had it not been for a vigorous protest by the
Taiwanese people, China would have further
eroded Taiwan's sovereignty.
The "One World One Dream" slogan that China
touted for the Beijing Olympics demanded that
China behave as a civilized country. It should
do so by respecting the human rights of people
within and outside its borders, including the
wishes of the Taiwanese people for "One Taiwan,
One China."
