"Thriving democracy"

As Taiwanese Americans, we treasure the freedom, openness and respect for human rights that have made this country such a beacon of hope for others around the world. We mourn for our fellow citizens destroyed by the acts of terror committed on Sept. 11 and stand with all Americans in telling the perpetrators that the torch of the Statue of Liberty has not been snuffed out by their actions but burns even more brightly. Our native land, Taiwan, has finally lifted up the same torch of freedom and democracy. Our relatives there join us in offering our condolences to those who grieve and our support for the rebuilding ahead. Together, we will continue the task of building a world where human rights and democracy thrive.
