A
firm commitment to democratic Taiwan
The Taiwanese American community is grateful for President
Bush's firm commitment to democratic Taiwan, as evidenced
in the arms sale package and his recent statement to defend
Taiwan against China's
aggressions.
We believe this is in the interest of the United States as
it deters increased hostility on the part of China toward
Taiwan, allowing the ideals of democracy to continue flourishing
there. Secretary of State Colin Powell put it well when he
said "a strong Taiwan is the foundation for peace and
stability in that part
of the world."
In addition, Bush's actions are most effective as an inducement
to serious dialogue between Taiwan and China. Taiwan's democratically
elected President, Chen Shui-bian, has repeatedly
declared his willingness to sit down and discuss all issues.
It is high time for China's leader to respond.
