SEMANTIC GAP

It is true that Americans’ viewpoint on China is narrow in some aspects, but Mr. Guy’s view on Taiwan’s status needs to be broadened.

While the Chinese consider Taiwan part of China, most other nations and the United States do not "consider" it as such. In fact, most of these nations were forced to "acknowledge" or "notice" the so-called "one-China" policy, but not to "recognize" it. It is like the different wording the U.S. played between ":sorry" and "Apology" related to the April 1 EP-3E surveillance plane collision near Hainan Island. There seems to be a big difference.;

CHINESE HAVE LONG BEEN AGGRESSORS

Re Kingsley Guy’s column, "Americans’ viewpoint tends to be narrow": China is historically an aggressive country. China has a total of 4,700 years’ history. In the first 2,000 years, they were only gathering in a small region in the Yellow River area. There were at least six or seven countries co-existing in the beginning. After many wars doing several hundreds of years. China became one country (about 2,500 years ago) at the region between the Yellow River and north of Young-Ze river, a small region of territory compared to today’s China.

But Chinese emperors have never stopped invading their neighbor countries. When the Han dynasty and Tong dynasty were at their peaks, their territories expanded to al their neighbors. Tibet and Mongolia have been on an off as part of Chinese occupied regions, but never became and integral part of China.

Taiwan was never on the map until 400 years ago. Taiwan has only become part of Chinese territory in a very brief period of time before it was transferred to Japan in 1895, after China lost the war to the Japanese.

After Communists took over China in 1949, china has had territory wars and/or disputes with every neighboring country. Communist has conflicts with Russia, India, Vietnam, Philippines, Korea, Taiwan and the USA.

Please let us not forget that we have lost many thousands of GI’s lives during the Korean and Vietnam wars because of Communist Chinese involvement.
