US Administration
Seemingly Eases Objections on Taiwan Referendum
"We're still studying the language in the referendum, and we are also studying the response that
we've heard from Beijing," Powell said at a State Department press conference on January 20, 2004.
Secretary of State Colin Powell's Interview with Phoenix TV (01/20/04)
For the past few months, the Bush administration has been criticized for keeping silent on Chinese military threat
while condemning Taiwan's referendum, a representation of a democracy. Finally, Deputy Assistant Secretary
State for East Asia and Pacific Affairs, Randy Schriver, in a testimony before U.S.-China Security Review
Commission on February 6, 2004, publicly denounced Chinese missiles that are threatening the stability of the
Taiwan Strait.
