When Chinese leader Hu Jintao attended the opening of the annual meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in New York today, he was met with a rally held in Dag Hammarskjold Plaza by Taiwanese Americans advocating for Taiwan’s UN membership.

In the rally, the Taiwanese Americans read statements from several Members of Congress in support of inclusion of Taiwan in the United Nations. They are House Assistant Majority Whip Sue Kelly (R-NY), Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY), Rep. Edolphus Towns (D-NY), Rep. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO).

Rep. Weiner states, “ I am proud to be a member of the Congressional Taiwan Caucus, and believe there is no question that the United States must stand strong and advocate for Taiwan's independence from China and inclusion as a United Nations member state. The policy of exclusion must stop now.”

Rep. Towns writes, “Taiwan is not only a free, open and independent democracy, it is a good neighbor and friend to countries in need around the world. Time and time again Taiwan heeds the call of the UN and others for emergency assistance to countries beset by the devastation of natural disaster or war. The people of Taiwan have demonstrated that they are responsible citizens of the world. They deserve a voice and a seat at the UN!”

Rep. Tancredo states: “ Taiwan’s generosity and humanitarian efforts have included aide for refugees in Kosovo…..New York City in the wake of September 11 and Hurricane Katrina last month….I am hopeful that the UN delegates will resist the relentless and irrational pressure of the communist regime in Beijing and accord the people of Taiwan their rightful representation in this important world body.”

Rep. Kelly writes, “The Taiwanese people have shown themselves to possess both the resources and a unique creativity to contribute to the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund, and other affiliate organizations… We must persist and progress our opposition to this [China’s] egregious and unnecessary oversight until Taiwan is finally and fully accepted into the international community.”

Rep. Brown says, “Taiwan, a country seeking peace and stability in its region, deserves the right to membership in the United Nations.”

FAPA President Ming-chi Wu, Ph.D. says: “It is unjust, unfair and unreasonable that Taiwan, given its democratic achievements and generous contributions to the international community, continues to be rejected by the United Nations. The United Nations’ behavior is tantamount to being an accomplice of the Chinese in choking Taiwan’s international space. The United Nations should not AGAIN turn a blind eye to Taiwan's repeated appeals to join the organization.”
