SCHAFFER
PUSHES TAIWAN SELF-DETERMINATION Resolution Backs Taiwan's
Standing in the Community of Nations
August
3
WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Congressman Bob Schaffer (R-CO) introduced
a Resolution last night in the House establishing U.S. support
for Taiwan's participation in the United Nations and other
international organizations.
"Taiwan
has proved itself a long-standing friend of the United States.
It has earned the right to join other democratic nations
as a full member of the international community," Schaffer
said. "I expect my colleagues to stand with me and
clearly show the people of Taiwan the United States supports
the island democracy and its effort toward freedom and independence."
Schaffer's
resolution received initial endorsements from 13 bipartisan
cosponsors. The measure reaffirms the United States' commitment
made in the 1994 Taiwan Policy Review to actively support
Taiwan's membership in international organizations. The
U.S. House of Representatives approved similar legislation,
also authored by Schaffer, last October.
"Taiwan
continues as a beacon of freedom and democracy under the
shadow of communist China. Taiwan's courageous dedication
to democratic principles reinforces its rightful place as
a member of the United Nations. The citizens of our great
nation stand shoulder to shoulder with Taiwan."
